Leukocyte Alkaline Phosphatase levels- Clinical significance.

Leukocyte Alkaline Phosphatase-

  • enzyme found in all tissues
  • located in neutrophils, involved in intracellular metabolism
  • important in distinguishing between chronic granulocytic leukemia and leukemoid (leukemia-like) reactions

Decreased levels-

  • nephrotic syndrome
  • chronic granulocytic leukemia
  • infectious mononucleosis
  • paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria
  • chronic myelogenous leukemia
  • thrombocytopenic purpura
  • sickle cell anemia.

Elevated levels-

  • polycythemic vera                                                                                                                                                                             
  • leukemoid reactions                                                                                                                                                                         
  • myelofibrosis
  • Hodgkin's disease
  • aplastic leukemia
  • thrombocytopenia
  • multiple myeloma.
